Packer fans living in Minnesota

There are a lot of Wisconsin transplants living in the Twin Cities, meaning there's a fair number of Packer fans living here. And here's what I've got to say to them:

Good for you.

If I lived in the cowshit smelling void that is Wisconsin, I'd move to the gorgeous cultural center that is Minneapolis-St. Paul too. And this weekend, as Wisconsin residents pile into the Twin Cities to get tickets to the Viking-Packer game, I don't blame you for coming and making a weekend of it; after all, I know that a visit to the Mall of America counts for you as a cultural excursion.

Sure, the Metrodome sucks. But we're too busy supporting the Walker, the Guthrie, the Ordway, the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, and the Orpheum to build a stadium for football. So you can keep your Lambeau Field as an urban landmark (and you can keep your Dahmer and your McCarthy too); we'll keep our Spoonbridge and Cherry.

So I'm happy that Packer fans want to plan their vacations here, and even want to come live here. You're welcome to come here and continue rooting for your team in the piss yellow and vomit green jerseys.

  1. Let us appreciate wwtb?'s attempt to antagonize Packer fans and start an irrational flame war by noting that PV has lived in and continues to work in WI and finds it a perfectly lovely place. Really, this is all in fun.

I live in Wisconsin, and I look forward to every visit I make to MN.

It's like Wisconsin, only better in every way.

i think all that MN culture is just compensating for the poor sports teams. in wisconsin you see good simple country people perfectly at peace with their lives and their lack of book learning because they have already been fulfilled by the 12 going on 13 NFL titles.
I live in the land where MN players go when they want to win a title so I feel I have special insight into MN sports.

This post is obvious flame-bait, but I'll play along.

The "Wisconsin is a backwater; the Twin Cities are a cultural jewel" argument is old, dusty, way too easy and simply not true.

Aside from the Twin Cities, what has Minnesota got going on? Not much. Twin Cities residents (I'm one) should rightly be proud of their accomplishments, building a relatively cosmopolitain city on the prairie as they have. But travel outstate and you'll run into the sort of dead small towns and backwoods hicks that wwtb claims populate Wisconsin entirely.

There are tons of Wisconsin transplants in the Twin Cities, and this is often used as evidence that Wisconsin is a backwater that its natives long to escape. But the fact is, the Twin Cities are a big economic/cultural hub that draws people from Wisconsin, Iowa, and the Dakotas. Just as major population centers all over the U.S. draw people from neighboring states.

The other thing that explains this? Tons of Minnesota students attend college in Wisconsin, where the schools are better. While there, they meet Wisconsin native and -- because Wisconsinites are so good-looking and charming -- fall helplessly in love with them. When it comes time to settle down, the Minnesotans insist on returning to their home state, because they can't bear to be away from their high school friends and because it's apparently a law in Minnesota that no Twin Cities resident may ever leave the area permanently.

On another note, the whole Packers/Vikings rivalry is kind of one-sided. Growing up in Green Bay, I never thought about the Vikings. And, east of Eau Claire, Wisc., most Packers fans didn't give the Vikings much thought. The Bears are the Packers biggest rival. It's only since the Moss era, when the Bears sucked and the Vikings were good (by the way, nice job there, driving your team's best player out of town. How's that working out for you?) that the Packers/Vikings rivalry has taken on any real significance for Packers fans. How sad, then for Vikes fans, to spend all that time hating the Packers in an unrequited rivarly.

Minnesota was first Packer country--- and will re-tain it's title after the Vikings move to Los Angeles or Toronto.

Yes--- your wonderful owner Mr Wolf has already planned it.

BTW-- I am a Packer fan living in Minnesota.

It is great to watch the Packers every week.

    Why?

Because the local Fox channel shows the Green and Gold.

    Why?

Because the majority of residents want it that way.

The Vikings don't sell out unless the Bears or Packers are in town.

    Why?

Because half of The Porta Potty Dome fills up with Bear and Packer fan.
