Check out this question and answer posed to Brad Childress found at Vikings.com:
"Q: Are you going to give Antoine Winfield his wish and let him take Donald Driver?
A: It’s really kind of more in-depth than that. He going certainly to see Donald Driver by virtue of the fact that he plays his corner position and he also plays in the nickel. If we do that then that means he has got to follow him off the field when Driver comes off the field, and I don’t necessarily want that to happen."
Okay, maybe I am misreading this, but it really doesn't make any sense to me. "It's really kind of more in-depth than that."? Well Brad I figured this much and I would guess most people would realize that a defensive scheme is going to be more in depth. But seriously how idiotic is this statement, "If we do that then that means he has got to follow him off the field when Driver comes off the field, and I don't necessarily want that to happen." Holy Crap!
I might not be a head coach in the NFL, but even I know that having Antoine Winfield cover Driver no matter where he is on the field does not mean that he has to go off the field when Driver comes off the field. It means that when Driver is on the field then the scheme needs to be adjusted to allow for Winfield to cover him no matter where he lines up even if he lines up in the slot. This might be the most idiotic answer to a simple question that I have ever seen and Childress' logic is flawed.
Fire Childress for being so Stupid.Fire Childress cause its the right thing to do.
ReplyDeleteuh, that was the Brad version of a joke, PV.
ReplyDelete^^^ It was holy hitter.
ReplyDeleteI think that was coachspeak for, "I'm not going to give any of my gameplan away, especially 5 days before the game."
ReplyDeleteChildress doesnt allow the players to play to their strenghts.Winfield should be on Driver the whole night.
ReplyDeleteWe all know that he wont, because chilly says what happens on the field.Same stupid plays they need 12 yards and throw a 5 yard dink.
Opening drive should be 2 screen plays to A.P. then a deep shot downfield. If these recievers cant get open bench them and put the next string in.Cant hurt production wise.
Its crunch time for the season, either we turn it around here or its going to be a long season for the purple.
We got a Def,we got a running game,Brad Johnson is really not a bad Q.B. in the right set up.But he couldnt survive in Chillys offense,T.J. an upcoming young Q.B. cant survive in it.Holcomb not bad at times cant survive in it.Bollinger cant survive anywhere.
I keep reading about how Childress is an Offensive genuis.Where was he an Offensive genuis,I can be one sitting on the toilet too.
Sorry I am starting to believe that something is truly Offensive in Minny and its starting to take shape in a balding short non- genuis coach.
I believe in giving anyone a chance but the plays seem very familar very predictable.
Whats the reason for our recivers not clicking. You cant tell me these guys have no talent at all.
Anyway go Vikes.
B.T.W. for all you Johnson haters, please correct me if I be wrong.Johnson sports that bling ring.

Yes, speedlod, and Trent Dilfer sports a ring too. So what? Johnson was once a decent NFL quarterback. He isn't anymore, for the simple reason that he has lost too much physical ability. He was never very mobile, but now he is a statue, and he never had a great arm, but now he has zero velocity left. You can't play quarterback in the NFL with that skill set anymore; there is simply too much speed on the defensive side of the ball. If Romo had gotten hurt in the first quarter last Sunday night, there is a very good chance the Bears would have won that game, instead of getting blown out.
ReplyDeleteIt amazes me how people think, especially with how much of the passing game one can see on T.V., that Childress is calling bad plays because the completion is made to a receiver five yards short of the first down stick. Do you think the Vikings are only sending one receiver out, or maybe, just maybe, the fact that none of the receivers past the first down stick can get any seperation, because they aren't any good, has something to do with it?
Good grief, if you are going to rip Childress, do so sensibly. He has been head coach for 20 months, and it is still unclear whether the Vikings have a qb on the roster who throws the ball accurately on a consistent basis more than 25 yard downfield. Brad Johnson was overthrowing wide open Marcus Johnson forty yards downfield at a critical moment against Buffalo last year, Tavaris Jackson was overthrowing wide open Troy Williamson 40 yards downfield against the Falcons this year, and Kelly Holcombe was doing the same with Robert Ferguson last Sunday.
Another good reason to rip Childress is that, 20 months into the job, he doesn't have receivers on the roster who get open very often, and who frequently drop the ball when they do, or can't make a play if there is a defender anywhere near them. Of course, when you don't solve your qb problem, it gets to be really hard to attract good free agent receivers, so the errors just compound themselves.
Every time I hear someone whose primary complaint is the plays Childress or Bevell call, instead of the who Childress has put on the roster to run the plays, I just roll my eyes.
Holy Hitter, I'm pretty sure Childress was just shinin' the reporter in that exchange.
I read it as a joke. I wonder how it comes across when you hear it.
ReplyDeleteYes, there is the option of "reading" it as a joke. However, two things come up from this. First, are we imposing our own sarcastic humor upon Brad Childress (obviously I would have to hear the press conference to tell if he said it in a joking tone, etc.) Second, if he was saying it jokingly it is horrible. Why? Because any idiot with a brain knows that Winfield being on Driver at all times only refers to when Driver would be on the field of play and that it doesn't necessitate him leaving the field of play when Driver does. Childress' attempt at a joke was then ridiculous, because for it to have at least a semblence of humor you would need at least a conception that someone would think that this would be the case. But maybe that is just my demands of humor. Either way Childress annoyed me with this answer, joke or not.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous,Fact still remains that he has a Super Bowl ring I dont remember any Vikings getting 1.
ReplyDeleteIts Childress job to make sure the recievers connect with the Q.B. anyone can plainly see that theres nothing there. If our recivers are no good then get rid of them.Get 5 running backs that can run and catch and put them in.
If chilly cant realize that he has fielded a losing team and changes need to be made. Then get someone in there that can.I didnt wait all winter to see the Vikes go 1-15 this year.
Yes, speedlod, and by that logic, Brad Johnson is a better qb than Trakenton was. Perhaps you missed where I specifically wrote that Childress is to held responsible for the players he has chosen to have on the roster.
ReplyDeleteSheesh. "Tarkenton", or course, along with, "is to BE held".
ReplyDeleteI think Brad Johnson had a good career: there aren't a lot of QBs that led three different teams to the playoffs. But it was pretty clear last season he didn't have it anymore: he never had a very strong arm, and last year that arm looked dead. He just couldn't make a lot of the throws an NFL QB needs to be able to make.
ReplyDeleteSo whether Brad Johnson was a good quarterback and whether Brad Johnson was a capable quarterback LAST SEASON are two different questions.
Just cause a Q.B. has a ring doesnt make him better,Jeez Favre has 1 from 97 and he sucks at Q.B.
ReplyDeleteChildress sucks at being a coach. His game plan didnt work last year and from what I can gather from watching this year aint working yet.
Childress needs to go back getting coffee for those who can coach.
