Super Bowl Rooting

I'm a suffering Minnesota sports fan: it's not in my nature to root for a fanbase to see its team win a sixth Super Bowl.  But I am rooting for the Pittsburgh Steelers.  The Steelers are the better team, and they've been a good team all year long. They went 12-4 against a tough schedule, and they field a smothering defense (#1 in points allowed and #1 in yards allowed).   The Cardinals have been great in the playoffs, but they were of course a 9-7 team that outscored opponents by one point.  They would be a fluky champion, a team able to ride a hot Kurt Warner-Larry Fitzgerald streak at the right time.

There are people I like on both sides (in Arizona Kurt Warner and Larry Fitzgerald, in Pittsburgh Troy Polamalu and Mike Tomlin).  But for some reason I want to see restoration of order, in which the champion is a dominant, superior team, not a nice story of a surprise underdog.

Whom are you rooting for?

  1. As a Viking fan, I root for the NFC unless it's the Packers or Cowboys. Plus, I'd like to see old man Warner win one more. So, I'm rooting for the Cardinals.

  2. I'm usually an underdog guy. I also find the Steelers brand of football dull. But I also don't want Warner to get another chance to thank Jesus.

I guess I'll be rooting for Tomlin more than anything. Then Viking fans will start crying that we should have kept Tomlin and fired Childress after the 2006 season. That's always fun.

  4. I like to look for ties to the Vikings.

Living near St Louis allowed me to watch Kurt Warner most weekends and he is a good guy who can be overtly annoying in his display of his faith, but he is good, just overly sappy sweet (sort of disgusting for a quarterback). If he wins, he'll secure a spot in the Hall of Fame and have one more Super Bowl win (or loss) than the self centered diva, Brett Favre.

The Cards have Larry Fitzgerald, the best playing receiver in the playoffs. He grew up the Vikings ball boy being tutored by Cris Carter and watching Randy Moss. I wish him success where ever he plays and always will hope that he can return to Minnesota.

Other ties to the Minnesota Vikings for the Steelers include Mewelde Moore. I've seen quite a few Steelers games this year for some reason and including the two that MeMo ran for near or over 100 yards. I've always liked his pass catching third down abilities and think he has contributed in small part to the Steeler success.

Then there is Mike Tomlin, the former charismatic defensive coordinator of the Vikes. He was partly responsible for bringing the swagger to the Vikes D and it earned him the job heading Pittsburgh. (Leslie Frazier has since built on swagger.) I love good strong defensive and emotional (and smart) football, and that is exactly what Mike brings to the table. Even though the Steelers defeated the Vikes decades ago in the Super Bowl, I will be rooting for them on Super Bowl Sunday.

  5. I will be rooting for the Cards, because they have been bad more often than they are good. I do not think they have much of a chance, but it would be nice to see the Red Birds hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

Steelers. They do things right as a franchise.
MN connection: Tomlin, Spaeth, Moore, Russell.

How irksome would it be for the Cardinals to win a Super Bowl before the Vikings manage to do so?

I'll probably still be cheering for them though.

  8. Haha i know what you mean. An underdog story is nice, but somtimes is great to see a big team go through the gears and destroy the underdog. Great post.

Go Cards - I can't wait for Warner to thank the Holy Trinity!!!

The Steelers got enough rings for one hand, no reason for them to start wearing them on the other!

I am going to root for the Cards ass seeing one team that has never won it can give me hope that one day the Vikings will.
