Emotionally, about the "divorce" I think Favre has the most mature view of the matter--the times were great, you can't take them away, this is life, stuff happens in life, if you support me great, if not that's your business. I thought, initially anyhow, he had the best perspective about coming back--if you've moved on, that's fine, but let me go somewhere else.
I never understood people who acted like this was an outcome worse than death. There are certainly worse things in life that can happen than your favorite player playing for "the enemy." Loyalty makes us strange, though, especially in a state where fandom is a sort of religious zeal.
Some people are loyal to the team no matter what, no matter the player. It turns out that over the years I became more loyal to the player than the team. I always suspected I somewhat resented the Packers for surrounding their all-time qb with middling talent--I'll never forgive Wolf and Thompson for each passing on Randy Moss (although at least Wolf admitted his error).
Anyhow, blind loyalty is something of a mystical quality. It can go very quickly I've found, but while it remains it makes you say and do things you never expected you'd do--easy for the former beloved to become your great enemy. I cheered against the Packers and I have anxiety dream about the Vikings.

RKAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23140411.post-36323764122478803972009-10-24T20:15:53.709-05:002009-10-24T20:15:53.709-05:00I am a Viking lifer. I have lived and died a thousand times through NFL football seasons for my entire life.

Every big win I rejoiced and every tragic loss I bled out in Viking purple.

One thing I didn't think I would ever do is cheer Bret Farve. I have called for his head, for what seems like a century and have begged Viking defenses for decades to rupture his brain stem or grind him into steak tar tar.

I always thought he was good, maybe outstanding, but he was a Packer and by being such, was lower than whale dung.

I was bound by team loyalty not to appreciate the enemy and only grudgingly could admit the opponent's absolute ability.

Now, I am free. Brett, you are good. Real good.
I'm sorry for all of the "Kill that son of a bitches" over the years, but they were in the heat of battle. I hope you understand.

I hope you live a long life and have many grandchildren, but only after you help bring us the NFL Championship trophy. I am desperate.

Remember, we Viking fans fans have lost our sense of humor, it (our sense of humor) was last seen with Brad Childress' hairline.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23140411.post-53977261734483309152009-10-24T01:06:51.404-05:002009-10-24T01:06:51.404-05:00i miss Antoine Winfield too.. i was looking for hi...i miss Antoine Winfield too.. i was looking for him the whole 1t half and during halftime went online and found out he was injured.. hope he gets better.. hes a great player..

JordanAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23140411.post-60227670421560597582009-10-23T11:40:43.435-05:002009-10-23T11:40:43.435-05:00Joe, you know I love you and your writing. And you...Joe, you know I love you and your writing. And you make some fine points throughout your entire post...

But honestly - don't tell Packers fans how to feel right now. Everyone from the home state that I've talked to has a different take on it. Don't make the same mistake that national media does in lumping us all together. Some are very hurt, some have transmuted that hurt into anger... some, like myself, are glad the rollercoaster is for the most part over, looking forward to when the Vikes come to Lambeau, and really not at all surprised that events turned out as they did.

The Vikes are the frontrunner now, don't condescend to a rival. For my part, a respected rival, but a rival nonetheless.Cianhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05000910460478958893noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23140411.post-40352278344901280252009-10-23T10:51:00.977-05:002009-10-23T10:51:00.977-05:00Loved the section on luck. My cell phone flooded with texts from the Wisconsin side of my family following the Vikes-Ravens game complaining about the Vikings being the luckiest team in football. I think in a 33-31 shootout its hard to say that the entire game was won on a missed field goal. On the other hand, you have the Broncos-Ravens game week 1 where the Broncos got 29% of their offensive production and 59% of their scoring on a tipped ball with time expiring. I'd call that luck, but even then you have to go back and look at the possibility that the Bronco's great play on defense throughout the game put them in position to make something happen in the end.Tim Carlsonnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23140411.post-28798550350074395132009-10-23T08:03:55.107-05:002009-10-23T08:03:55.107-05:00There are a lot of interesting things to think abo...There are a lot of interesting things to think about in this article.

Favre's interceptions, I think, could be part of his testament. Who else has had the opportunity to throw so many and still start? If the good justifies the bad for any team willing to suffer one in order to enjoy the other, then a lot of bad implies a whole lot of good. That's one very simple angle on the subject.

"If the Ravens miss a field goal in the first quarter, it doesn’t make the Vikings’ win appear lucky." I liked what you said about luck, and I think you're right in dismissing terms like "undeserved" and "tainted". However, I think it's completely appropriate to think "uh, I don't like our chances now" when the Vikings hand the ball over with nearly 2 minutes remaining to a team that's suddenly successfully passing and expect to protect a 2 point lead. Experience and emotion fed the sinking feeling, but a serious football fan knows it's much easier for an opponent to get into field goal position than it is to get into the endzone. (although, as you pointed out [and as the game showed] getting into field goal position does not secure a win).

Good to have you back.Peternoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23140411.post-10654027979008659972009-10-23T07:03:53.419-05:002009-10-23T07:03:53.419-05:00So good to have you back!So good to have you back!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23140411.post-20948896708820742742009-10-23T03:10:06.752-05:002009-10-23T03:10:06.752-05:00No matter what happens from here on I can also say...No matter what happens from here on I can also say there was a moment in time where you loved Favre.

RKAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-23140411.post-486625469534906202009-10-22T21:31:47.456-05:002009-10-22T21:31:47.456-05:00Glad to hear some insightful analysis!
